Three kids. Seven days. Three birthdays.
October 29 – Liesel turns 14.
October 30 – Milo turns 16.
November 4 – Maddox turns 12.
On the day Maddox was born, Milo and Liesel came to meet their new baby brother. These two already tiny humans were so sweet and gentle with someone even tinier. Looking back at that moment, none of them had any idea of the years of chaos, laughter, arguments, and adventures that lay ahead.
Fast-forward 12 years, and it's a little harder to get all three of them together doing the same thing. But this week, they somehow ended up in an impromptu wrestling match. I'm not sure what sparked it (probably Milo), but I loved watching them laugh and have fun together. There was absolutely nothing gentle about it this time around, but as I stood there taking pictures, I couldn't help but see the exact same love that was captured in that first photo 12 years ago. It just looks a little different these days.
They fight. They tease. They drive each other absolutely crazy, and in the process, drive me crazy too. I've lost count of how many times I've said, "Be kind to each other!" or "Can you please just talk to each other like human beings?" But they also make each other laugh harder than just about anyone else can. They have their own inside jokes, same memories, and a shared childhood that no one else will ever quite understand.
I know they won't always be living under the same roof, and eventually they'll have their own lives and their own things going on. But I hope they always make time for each other. I hope they keep laughing together, giving each other a hard time, and showing up for one another when it matters. And maybe, someday, they'll even appreciate all those years I spent telling them to be nice to each other. Because at the end of the day, the best gift we ever gave any of them was each other.
